Rent a car.
You really need a car — scooters are not safe here. GH Car Rental picks you up at Casa Amalia (gh-autoverhuur.nl). Prins Car Rental rents from the airport (prinscarrental.com). Heads-up: the KIA Picanto and KIA Rio are the most stolen cars on the island. For navigation, Maps.me works perfectly offline.

Travel light.
Curaçao runs around 32 °C year-round. Daytime: shorts, cotton T-shirts, flip-flops, a hat. Evening: jeans with a cotton or linen shirt or vest. Cotton dresses and sandals work too. A good deodorant and a fresh perfume go a long way in this climate.

Electricity in Curaçao.
The local supply is 110 V at 50 Hz — our outlets match. Forgot a travel adapter for your 220 V devices? Van der Tweel supermarket sells them. Power outages happen occasionally but aren't daily.

The grocery man.
After a long flight, it is wonderful to arrive to a stocked fridge. Robert-Jan can put together a custom grocery package — contact him at least three days before arrival.

Jan Thiel Beach.
One of Curaçao's most popular beaches — 1 km from us. A 2-minute drive or a 20-minute walk. Water sports, beach tennis, diving and sailing. Live music on Saturday evenings. Private beach with an entrance fee for swimming; after 5:00 PM admission is free.

Caracas Bay Beach.
Public and free. Popular with locals — especially crowded on Sundays.

Be careful on the beach.
Don't leave belongings unattended — theft happens, and you can't tell who is trustworthy by appearance. Tourists steal from tourists too.

Zanzibar at Jan Thiel Beach.
Wednesday evenings — intimate live music during the Unplugged Beach Sessions. Saturday — Curaçao's most popular Happy Hour with a DJ and live band. Sunday — close the weekend in style during Shaky Sunday.

Salt pans of Jan Thiel.
Once a working salt area until 1975, now a stunning nature reserve. Pink salt lakes and flamingos. Go early — it's cooler and quieter. Sunscreen, hat, plenty of water; little shade.

Supermarket.
Van der Tweel supermarket sits just off Jan Thiel Beach, inside the white Papagayo Hotel building — daily groceries, fresh bread, Albert Heijn products. Open daily 7:30 AM – 9:00 PM.

Mangusa foodcourt.
Eat like the locals. Open daily from 10:00 AM, with meats, fish, soups, salads. Take a number, point at what you want, pay by weight. Don't mix seafood with other proteins — the whole plate gets charged at the seafood rate. Inside Mangusa Hypermarket.

One of our favourites for breakfast, lunch or dinner — local dishes, relaxed atmosphere, stunning view over Caracas Bay. Open daily 9:00 AM – 9:30 PM.

Start the morning with a latte at De Dames, in the cosy Promenade Shopping Center. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a stylish coffee break. Mon–Fri 7:30 AM – 5:45 PM · Sat 8:00 AM – 5:45 PM. Kitchen closes at 5:00 PM.

Euros are difficult to exchange.
The Caribbean Guilder is the official currency. Dollars are widely accepted; euros are difficult. Some banks will exchange a maximum of €250 per day on presentation of your passport and ticket. Withdraw Caribbean Guilders from ATMs — set your debit card to "World" before you travel.

Every Thursday evening, the heart of Punda turns into a friendly street party — music, shopping, drinks at the outdoor bars. Most weeks there's a theme, with local artists and a fireworks show at 8:15 PM. Wilhelmina Café between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM is our spot — happy hour, two drinks for one. Arrive early or you won't get a table.

Several boats sail to Klein Curaçao, but we recommend just one: Miss Ann. A luxury yacht and the best service on the route.

Worth a visit — once home to the indigenous people of the island. Today you can see the stalactites and stalagmites inside.

Christoffel National Park.
Climb the highest point on the island for a breathtaking view. Leave around 5:30 AM to beat the morning traffic — without traffic the drive from Casa Amalia takes 45 to 60 minutes. Park opens at 6:00 AM; entry is USD 15 per person. Bring at least 1 litre of water per person, a sandwich, a chocolate bar, a cap and proper trainers.

How it all began.
Between 2007 and 2009, many Venezuelan tourists were visiting Curaçao and hotels were overflowing. Haitham imagined an alternative — a small, homely, comfortable, affordable place near the beach. That vision became Casa Amalia, named after the Venezuelan actress Amalia Pérez Díaz. Later, a Dutch tour operator discovered it; today, Casa Amalia is a beloved place to stay for many Dutch travellers.
